Mary Dimmock [d.12.5]

Mary Dimmock was the fifth child of John Dimmock & Eliza Ellis born April 21st, 1890 at 12 Queens St, Ryhope, Co Durham.

In 1901 Mary was living with her parents & brother & sisters at 29 Tunstall St, Ryhope, Co. Durham. Her father John was a coal miner/hewer at this time, & her older brother Charles was an underground engine driver.

Mary was still living at home at 29 Tunstall St in 1911. With her & her parents was her sister Sarah Ann who was now married to Robert Speed Pallister & their 4 month old son John McCree Pallister.

Mary (known as Polly) married Edward Chapman on December 28th, 1912 at St Paul’s, Ryhope. Edward was born December 28th, 1889, the son of Hannah & John Chapman, a miner. At the time of the wedding Polly was living with her family at 29 Tunstall St, Ryhope & Edward was living at 15 Burdon St, Ryhope. Witnesses at the wedding were William Robson & Maria Lowe.

According to the electoral registers of Ryhope Colliery, Polly & her husband Edward, known as Ned, were living with Polly’s parents in 1926 at 29 Tunstall St, Ryhope. By 1928 Polly’s parents had moved out of 29 Tunstall St but Polly & Edward continued to live there until at least 1945.

The 1939 register shows Polly & Ned living at 29 Tunstall St, Ryhope with their daughter Sarah Ann. Ned was a colliery hewer below ground & Sarah Ann was described as seeking work, not previously employed. Daughter Sarah Ann was to marry Andrew Magee from Ireland in 1943 in Sunderland.

Daughter Eliza had married Joseph R Bewick in 1936 in Sunderland & in 1939 they were living at 5 Ralph Avenue, Sunderland with daughter Joan & son John E & Joseph was a coal miner putter.

Ned died aged 72 in 1962, the cause of death being pneumoconiosis.

Polly died in July-September 1976, aged 86, her death being registered in Sunderland.
